Tommy Toy Fundraiser

Tommy Toy Fundraiser

This year we are collecting toys for the Tommy Toy Fund. The Tommy Toy Fund started in 1974 with a simple letter written to the Norwich Bulletin. The letter was from a young girl in Eastern Connecticut concerned that there would be no toys for her younger brother Tommy on Christmas morning. She had overheard a conversation her mother was having that she had no extra money this holiday season to spend on toys for her children and instead needed the money for rent, utilities, and food. This young girl wrote her letter to the Bulletin in hopes that somebody in the region would be able to provide a few presents for them on Christmas morning.

“I’m old enough to understand,” the girl wrote. “But my little brother, Tommy, won’t understand why Santa Claus stopped at all his friends’ houses, but not at our house.”

The then editors of the Bulletin, Malcolm Morse and Greg LaFreniere, wrote a story and immediately published it just days before Christmas. The response from the community was overwhelming and enough donations were received that toys were provided to at least a dozen children in the New London and Windham counties.

It’s been 44 years but every year the Tommy Toy Fund continues to raise toys for children in need. This year Charleen’s Portrait Studio is an official drop off spot for the Tommy Toy Fund. Between now and December 8, you can stop by the studio and drop off a new unwrapped toy. The best part is you will be entered into a drawing to win a family portrait session!

If you are unable to make it into the studio by December 8, we are hosting a special event on Sunday December 9 from 1-3. Schedule in for a 5 minute time slot to bring you unwrapped toy to the studio and get a free family portrait taken on our beautiful Christmas set. We will provide you with a 4×6 as our gift to you.

Our goal is to raise 100 gifts for children in need. Please stop by and help us reach our goal!

Thank You!
